This is the very crucial stage when you required any claim for your two-wheeler insurance. It is very important that you have an appropriate insurance policy.
In India you can buy a third-party or comprehensive insurance policy as per your requirement but minimum third-party insurance is mandatory.
Ideally you should have comprehensive insurance because it will cover both third-party and own damage section as well.
If you have a good insurance policy from a reputed company then you may not face a problem at the time of two-wheeler insurance claim.
Claim of Two Wheeler Insurance
If your two-wheeler met in an accident and your bike damage then don’t be panic. Be cool, calm and have some patience because you’re a small wrong move can make you in more loss.
In an accident anything can happen maybe only your bike is damaged or possible any third-party damage also.
More or less claim process or the same as car insurance but take all the steps with care. Please ensure that you have all the necessary documents at the time of the incident. You should carry a valid driving license, valid insurance policy, and other documents.
Normally following claims can arise out for two-wheeler insurance:
- Own Damage Claim – Your bike gets damaged
- Theft Claim – Bike Stolen
- Third-Party Property Damage Claim
- Third-Party Death or Disability Claim
- Death or Disability Claim of Owner Driver
- Death or Disability Claim of Pillion Driver or Co-Passenger
- Physical Injury Claim etc
You should ensure that you have the coverage for which you are filling the claim.
Steps of Claim Process
There are a series of steps for the claim process of two-wheeler insurance. More or less process of the all the companies is the same. Some companies are now working very smartly and using technology very well.
Some companies facilitate you to process the claim through a mobile application and or live streaming also. Generally, there are the following steps:
1- On Spot Action
After a bike accident on the road you may face some traffic and public aggression on the spot. In this situation you should not be so intense and panic. Try to be cool, calm and deal with the situation with patience and care.
First check that what is the damage. If there is any physical injury to you or anyone then first arrange medical ads or call to the ambulance.
You should collect some details of the spot if possible. Click some pictures and or make a video of the accident spot. It can be helpful later. Collect some details of witnesses also like name and contact details. Collect the details of the third party also is involved.
2- Claim Intimation
You should inform your insurance company immediately or on time. So much delay in intimation may be the reason for the rejection of your claim. So always report the incident on time.
You must have your company customer care number with you or you can check from insurance policy or company website also.
Ensure that your company has a 24*7 customer care service. Try to save this number in your mobile so that you can easily access on the requirement.
When you will call the company to report the claim then your insurer will ask you certain details of an accident like how the accident happen, about damage, policy details, vehicle details, spot address and other relevant information. You should provide all the details correctly.
3- Surveyor/Loss Evaluation
After intimating the claim, your insurer will assign a surveyor for your claim. Surveyor will do the survey of the spot and bike depending on the claim and will evaluate the loss or damage.
After loss evaluation he will send the report to the company. One important step which you should take care that is avoid to repair the vehicle without company permission.
Ideally you should not move your vehicle from the spot without company consent. When the company gives you consent then you should tow the vehicle to the garage for repair.
Please do not drive the accidental bike to reach to the garage because it may cause some consequential loss to your bike. Insurance companies will not pay for consequential loss.
Provide all the required documents on time to the company so that claims can be processed faster. Normally you need to provide following documents for the own damage claim:
Claim Application Form
Driving Licence Copy
Insurance Policy Copy
FIR Copy if any
Others Documents (Case to Case basis)
5- Repair and Finalization
You should always prefer for authorized garage for the repair because here you will provide you cashless claim. When the insurer will give initial approval for the claim then authorized garage will start to repair the vehicle.
Depending coverage in policy insurer will provide the claim amount. You have to pay the compulsory deductible amount, voluntary deductible amount if any, depreciation amount, and other if any.
After the final settlement, the company will issue an asset delivery order and then you can take your bike from the workshop. Don’t forget to cancel your RC in case there is a total loss claim.
Network and Non-Network Garages
There are two processes of claim settlement. One cashless and another is the reimbursement process. Insurance companies have their tie-ups with some garages to process the claim cashless and faster.
The list of garages who have tie-ups with the insurance companies called Network garages and those garages who don’t have tie-ups called Non-network garages.
If you repair your vehicle to the authorized workshop then your claim will be processed on a cashless basis. But if you repair the vehicle on an unauthorized workshop then first you need to pay the full amount to them. Later you can process your claim on reimbursement basis from your company.
But what about total loss claim if your vehicle is hypothecated and there is loan outstanding? In this case claim will be given as per bank clause in your policy.
Do and Don’ts
These are some do and don’ts which you should follow:

|Follow traffic rules, Always carry all the required documents while driving like Driving License, Insurance Policy, RC, and other related documents||Don’t drive your vehicle in a damaged condition – it may increase your vehicle damage. Insurance companies do not pay for consequential loss.|
Does FIR must?
Normally, for small damage, FIR is not necessary. If there is any physical injury, death or disability or big damage then you should do FIR.
If you are confused at the time of the accident that should you do FIR or not? Simply call to your insurance company and ask them what to do. The company will better guide you in this regard and later there will not be any stress.
Why Claim Rejection?
Sometime you may have noticed that claim gets rejected. If damages are covered and you are following company terms & conditions then the insurer will pay the payable claim.
But if do any mistake or which is not covered under your policy then claim may get reject.
The company does not pay a claim if the driver was influenced by alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. The company also not pay a claim for consequential loss, and normal wear & tears. Please check the exclusion list from your insurance policy.
Thirds party claims will have some different process. In the case of a third-party claim, the amount is finalized by MACT (Motor Accident Claims Tribunal).
